William Strauss is an author, historian, playwright,
theater director, and lecturer.

Co-founder (with
Elaina Newport) and director of the
Capitol Steps,
a professional satirical troupe, for whom he still performs
occasionally.
Co-author of ten
books, including
Chance and
Circumstance, Generations, The Fourth Turning, Millennials Rising, and,
recently, Millennials and the Pop Culture
(with Neil Howe).
Playwright of three
musicals,
MaKiddo
(a parody of The Mikado, about gifted teenagers at a high-stress
high school) and
Free-the-Music.com
(about music downloading, with music by Bo Ayars and Steven Rosenhaus),
and
Anasazi
(about Hopi legend and prophecy, with music by Peter Kater), and two
plays,
The Big Bump
(about a reversal of time) and
Gray Champions
(about
generations in history).
Co-founder (with Judy
Bowns) and director of
The Cappies, an international high school theater program
through which students attend and review each others plays and
musicals, publish their reviews in major newspapers, and vote for awards
that are presented at Cappies Galas. There are currently fourteen
Cappies programs in the U.S. and Canada.
Producer (with Bowns) of
numerous Cappies events, including the Katrina Aid fundraiser, Cappies
Showcase, and
Cappies International Theater. For
this years C.I.T. program, he is overseeing a team of student
composers, lyricists, and script writers who are crafting a new musical
comedy about teenagers and technology.
Lecturer and consultant
for numerous public and private organizations about generational trends,
including MTV, Paramount Pictures, Hearst Magazines, Time, Pepsi,
Disney, Procter & Gamble, the Ford Motor Company, the U.S. Armed Forces,
and many others.
Graduate of Harvard
College (1969), Harvard Law School and the Kennedy School of Government
(1973).
Father of four children,
aged 22 to 29.
Husband of Janie Strauss,
member of the Fairfax County School Board.
